The long weekend is almost here! Monday, August 7 is our Civic Holiday; also known as the August Holiday, and other numerous names in many municipalities. Most Canadians will have the day off from work and what better way to commend the extended weekend by travelling. Here are our recommendations for some top getaway spots:
Canada Day may be over, but Canada 150 celebrations are still going strong. Take a trip to the nation’s capital and feel patriotic all over again. Visit Inspiration Village and see the art exhibits showcasing Canada’s provinces and territories. (Be sure to take a picture with the gigantic red OTTAWA sign!)
Another 150 related event on Monday is Ottawa Welcomes the World: Jamaica. In honour of Canada 150, Ottawa will be celebrating the role of Jamaica’s cultural heritage, featuring plenty of Jamaican cuisine, music and dance.
If you can’t go to a Muskoka cottage, Huntsville is the next big thing. Huntsville is technically in Muskoka, but it’s also a beautiful town located 215 kilometres north of Toronto. It’s filled with something for everyone. There’s The Nutty Chocolatier for the sweet tooth in the family, Algonquin Outfitters for the shopper, the Huntsville Craft Beer Trail for beer-lovers, and the Brunel Locks for those who want to relax and do some boat-watching.
This summer, why not visit the place where delicious Kawartha Dairy Ice Cream comes from? Or where The Tragically Hips’s song “Bobcaygeon” originated? The Kawarthas are a variety of towns and a chain of lakes connected together by the Trent-Severn Waterway. The summer is the best time to travel to the Kawarthas as each of the communities will offer all kinds of summer activities such as boat tours, eccentric shops and beautiful scenery.
Blue Mountain Resort
Although it’s mostly known as a popular winter destination, Blue Mountain Resort offers plenty of summer activities. If you’re an adventure-seeker, the Wind Rider Triple Zips and Timber Challenge High Ropes are just for you.
If you’re looking for something more easy going, there’s the Open-Air Gondola (make sure you have a camera) or the widely known Scandinave Spa. For something in between, there’s plenty to do from the Plunge! Aquatic Centre, Cascade Putting Course, the Mountaintop Segway Tours and much more.
Take a trip to see the magnificent Falls and witness this majestic wonder in all its glory. Enjoy the outstanding fireworks display of Canada’s longest running fireworks series, and watch the various live music performances happening all around the city. Visit the local wineries near the region and talk all things grape.
For the little ones, there are also many family-friendly attractions to see such as the Bird Kingdom; the world’s largest and indoor flying aviary, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum, The Rainforest Cafe and The Great Canadian Midway, filled with arcade games and simulated rides.
No matter where you end up for the long weekend, be sure to drive safely and pay attention to your surroundings. We are all eager to leave, but don’t rush the journey. Re-fresh your memory with these defensive driving safety tips.
Happy Long Weekend!
